Allegheny Whitefish

Let me first start by saying that Pittsburgh is awesome! Where else can you work in a 64 story office tower and after work walk 15 blocks to a boat dock with a fully loaded Super Air Nautique.  Once you board the boat, you are only a couple minutes away from glassy water with little other boat traffic. Yep, Pittsburgh has the best of both worlds, except when it rains.

Pittsburgh’s sewers were built over the course of the past 200 years.  Like most big city’s today, when it rains the sewers overflow and drain into the river.  This is not great for the people like me who swim and boat in the rivers.  Luckly, the Allegheny County Health Department monitors all of this and post it online as a CSO Alert.  As you will see in the video below, we ignore these.

So here’s the question – Would you swim in slightly poopy water (Allegheny Whitefish included) if you had 2 miles of glassy water all to yourselves all day?
